How To Analyse The Major Stress Triggers Which Led To The Arrival Of This Particular Bout Of Depression

It has been recognised for over a hundred years that the commonest trigger for a bout of major depression is a period of significant stress. As we have emerged into the twenty-first century with our new understanding of the neuroscience underlying this condition, we understand why. Some become confused, in that stress in certain situations is seen as the cause of the bout of depression in question. Stress is not the cause of depression: rather, it is the trigger which set off the bout. Many of us experience long bouts of significant stress but do not develop major depression. Some seem more resilient, through genes and upbringing, in coping with stress. Others, prone to become more anxious and fretful when exposed to significant stress, may proceed to depression.

If feeling better, it is time to analyse any stress triggers that may have set off this particular bout of depression. This is best done with a pen and paper, and preferably with the help of your guide, whether doctor or therapist.

Although some stressors have their origins in the past, we will confine ourselves in this section to immediate stressors.
